Herb B. Kuhn is the current president and CEO of the Missouri Hospital Association, the trade association serving the state’s 167 hospitals and health systems. The association provides a variety of services for its members, including federal, state, and local governmental representation and advocacy; health care policy development; public and professional education; database management and research; and public and media relations and communications. Incorporated in 1922, MHA has achieved national recognition for its innovative programs, particularly the Federal Reimbursement Allowance (FRA) program, which funds the state’s Medicaid services, and the Hospital Industry Data Institute, which provides data management services for the Alaska, Georgia, Kansas, Missouri, Tennessee, Virginia and Wyoming hospital associations.
In addition to his leadership at MHA, Mr. Kuhn also serves as a commissioner on the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC). Mr. Kuhn also serves on the following boards: Healthcare Services Association and Missouri Health Plan, Missouri Health Connection, Excellence in Missouri Foundation and on an advisory panel to the Healthcare Financial Management Association board.
Before joining MHA, Mr. Kuhn served in four different roles with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). During his tenure at CMS, Mr. Kuhn served as director of the Center for Medicare Management and as deputy administrator. He also served as the acting administrator and the acting director of the Center for Medicaid and State Operations.
Mr. Kuhn served as corporate vice president for the Premier Hospital Alliance before joining CMS. He also served as the vice president for advocacy for the American Hospital Association and worked on Capitol Hill.
In 2008, he was named as one of the top 100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare in the United States by Modern Healthcare magazine.
